Parent Resources

At Barefoot in the Plains Learning Academy, we understand that parents play a crucial role in their child's educational journey. This Parent Resources page is designed to provide you with valuable information and tools that will help you support your child's learning, particularly when it comes to using Living Books. Discover how these enriching materials can foster a love for learning and enhance educational experiences for students with disabilities.

Understanding Living Books

Living Books, a concept popularized by Charlotte Mason, emphasize the importance of engaging narratives that bring subjects to life. Unlike traditional textbooks, Living Books embody rich storytelling and allow students to connect emotionally and intellectually with the material. This approach is particularly beneficial for students with disabilities, as it nurtures their imagination and provides a more relatable context for learning. By immersing students in beautifully written, immersive tales, we enable them to grasp complex concepts in a way that resonates with their individual learning styles. Living Books serve not only as a tool for education but also as a gateway to developing empathy, critical thinking, and a lifelong love for reading.

Benefits for Students with Disabilities

For students with disabilities, traditional educational methods may often feel overwhelming or disengaging. Living Books offer an alternative that caters to diverse learning needs. The narratives are often rich in detail, allowing students to visualize and relate to the stories on a personal level. This connection can enhance comprehension and retention, leading to a more effective learning experience. Additionally, Living Books encourage discussions and interactions, providing opportunities for students to express their thoughts and feelings in a supportive environment. By integrating these books into our Personalized Learning Plans, we aim to create a tailored educational approach that meets each student's unique requirements, promoting confidence and independence in their learning journey.

Windows and Doors: Quality Literature

To help you get started, we’ve curated a list of Living Books that have proven to be effective for all students. Notable titles include 'Charlotte's Web' by E.B. White, which teaches themes of friendship and loyalty through the eyes of a pig and a spider, and 'The Wind in the Willows' by Kenneth Grahame, a delightful exploration of nature, adventure, and friendship. Other recommendations include 'The Tale of Peter Rabbit' by Beatrix Potter and 'Little House on the Prairie' by Laura Ingalls Wilder, both of which engage young readers with their vivid storytelling and relatable characters. For example, the 'Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe' take children to another place. They go "through the wardrobe" and can see themselves in a different light. Incorporating these Living Books into your child's reading routine can foster not just academic skills but also emotional and social development and is especially enriching for students with disabilities.
